Ronneburgite, K2MnV4O12, a new mineral from Ronneburg, Thuringia, Germany: Description and crystal structure
2001
Ronneburgite is a new chain vanadate mineral from Ronneburg, Thuringia, Germany. It occurs as reddish-brown crystals of equant, flattened, or short prismatic habit, up to 0.5 mm in length. The crystals have an adamantine luster and are translucent. Ronneburgite is biaxial negative with refractive indices n α = 1.925(5), n β = 1.960(10), n γ = 1.988(4), and 2 V x = 82°. Electron microprobe analysis (K 2 O = 16.93, MnO = 12.44, MgO = 0.62, V 2 O 5 = 68.54; total = 98.53 wt%) gives the empirical formula K 1.91 Mn 0.93 Mg 0.08 V 4.00 O 11.96 , which simplifies to K 2 MnV 4 O 12 . Ronneburgite is mono-clinic, space group P 2 1 / n , with a = 8.183(3), b = 9.247(3), c = 8.651(2) A, and β = 109.74…
Bellbergite?a new mineral with the zeolite structure type EAB
1993
The new mineral bellbergite, (K, Ba, Sr)2Sr2Ca2(Ca, Na)4Al18Si18O72 · 30H2O, has been found in Ca-rich xenoliths at the Bellberg volcano near Mayen, Eifel, Germany. It occurs as well formed bipyramids with a length up to 0.3 mm. Possible space groups are P63/mmc, P62c and P63mc with a = 13.244(1) A, c = 15.988(2) A, V = 2429 A3, Z = 1. The density is: Dm, = 2.20(2) Mg/m3, Dc = 2.19 Mg/m3. The empirical formula based on 72 oxygen atoms is: Ba0.26Na0.72K1.33Sr2.36Ca5.32Al17.55Si18.36O72 · 30H2O. The mineral is uniaxial negative with ω = 1.522(2) and e = 1.507(2) (λ = 589 nm). The strongest lines in the X-ray powder pattern are (d (A), I, hkl): 3.80 (100) (300, 212, 104), 6.58 (80) (102), 2.95…
Durability of calcarenitic hypogea in the underground cultural heritage of Palermo (Sicily)
2011
The paper deals with the stability conditions of hypogea, several hundred m 2 wide, dating from the Punic period to the XIX century, dug out of the calcarenitic table that makes up the bedrock of the Plain of Palermo in the Fossa della Garofala. This work concerns the influence that the shape of the hypogea and the characteristics of the lithotypes wields on the instability and decay phenomena taking place, by mean of laboratory tests on the calcarenite and parametric numerical models. The comparison between the numerical models and the actual instability phenomena validated the use of the empirical formula of Hoeck to the mechanical characterization of complex structured rock-mass in soft …
ΔJ-integral range estimation for fatigue crack growth rate description
2004
Abstract The paper presents an equation for fatigue crack growth rate description taking into account the ΔJ-integral range, which was verified experimentally for variable bending. Plane, notched specimens were tested under unilaterally restrained bending for different values of stress ratio R. The results of tests and numerical calculations were presented as characteristics of fatigue crack growth rate. It has been shown that in the case of a change of stress ratio from R=−1.0 to R=0.0, the crack rate increases twice for 10HNAP steel and five times for 18G2A steel. The empirical formula presented in the paper describes well the test results of fatigue crack rate in the steels.

The molecular weight distribution (MWD) of a high polymer is calculated from a weakly perturbed Zimm-plot of the classical light scattering on dilute solutions of Gaussian polymer coils (theta state). A typical Zimm-plot is simulated corresponding to the measurements of high accuracy as would be obtained by using the laser photometer described by Hack and Meyerhoff. The accuracy as published by these authors for small dissymmetries is used. Two numerical methods for calculating the MWD are briefly described and tested, both using an empirical formula for the Laplace image of the calculated MWD.
Field run-up measurements: Calibration of a physically based lagrangian shoreline model
2012
In the present contribution a measurement technique based on video imaging has been selected for the assessment of the maximum run-up. Such measurements have been used for the calibration of a numerical model and of an empirical formulation. The on-site run-up measurements have been carried out at “Lido Signorino” beach, near Marsala, Italy. The positions of the swash have been localized on a transect, normal to the shore, constituted by stakes placed at 0.5 m intervals each other. The video camera was placed orthogonally to the line of the stakes. For the numerical simulations a 1DH Boussinesq-type of model for breaking waves has been applied which takes into account the wave run-up by a L…

A typical Zimm-plot is simulated corresponding to the measurements of high accuracy as would be obtained by using the laser photometer described by Hack and Meyerhoff. Two inversion procedures are described in detail and tested, both of them avoiding the use of an empirical formula for the Laplace image of the calculated MWD. A complete numerical analysis of the results is given. The results are compared with those of …
